Furniture stencils

Transform dressers, tables, cabinets, chairs, and IKEA furniture with reusable furniture stencils. Whether you're updating a garage sale find or giving old furniture a fresh look, stencils make it easy to turn an outdated piece into something personal. At Cutting Edge Stencils, every pattern is artist-designed and made in the USA. Stenciling is an easy DIY project that can give a plain piece of furniture a custom look.

Explore furniture stencils for every project

Browse by furniture type to find the right stencil for your next makeover.

1. Dressers and nightstands

A stenciled dresser is one of the most satisfying furniture makeovers you can take on. Asha Bone inlay-style patterns can mimic the intricate geometric look of traditional inlay work using paint.

2. Coffee tables and side tables

A stenciled tabletop adds pattern and personality to a plain painted surface. Geometric, mandala, and decorative furniture stencils all work beautifully on flat table surfaces. The Simple Shapes design and Alhambra pattern both work well for tabletop projects.

3. Cabinets and doors

Cabinet stencils create a custom decorative finish on painted cabinet doors, hutch panels, and wardrobe fronts. The Anna Damask Craft pattern, Beads Craft pattern, and Lexington Craft pattern work well on cabinet and hutch surfaces where a repeating pattern adds decorative detail to the entire piece.

4. Chairs and benches

A stenciled chair back or bench seat adds a decorative focal point to a room without a full reupholstery project. Small mandala and geometric furniture painting stencils suit chair backs and seat panels, while the French Poem Craft pattern adds a layered typographic pattern to curved or flat surfaces.

5. IKEA furniture hacks

IKEA furniture hacks are a popular way to give basic pieces a more personalized look. A plain IKEA dresser, cabinet, or side table stenciled with a bone inlay or Moroccan pattern looks nothing like flat-pack furniture. The Raja bone inlay design and Neera bone inlay design are well suited to transforming IKEA dressers, cabinets, and other flat-pack furniture.

Give ordinary furniture a custom finish

A stencil is an affordable way to give furniture pieces a whole new look. Whether you are working with chalk paint, milk paint, or standard acrylic, a stenciled pattern adds detail that paint alone cannot achieve.

  • Reusable and durable: Reusable Mylar stencils can be cleaned after use and used again on future projects.

  • Crisp painted results: Get clean, sharp stencil edges by using minimal paint on your brush or roller. Remove excess paint before applying the stencil, then build the color gradually with thin coats to help prevent paint from bleeding under the edges.

  • Works with brushes and rollers: Use a stencil brush for detailed areas and a small dense foam roller for flat surfaces like drawer fronts and tabletops.

  • Easy surface preparation: Clean the furniture thoroughly and, when needed, prime or apply a suitable base coat before stenciling.

  • Choose your own colors: Choose paint colors that complement your furniture and give you the level of contrast you want.

How to find the right furniture stencils

With so many patterns and sizes to choose from, matching a stencil to your piece comes down to a few key factors. Here's what to check before you buy.

1. Match the stencil to the furniture

Check the size and shape of the surface you are stenciling. A large bone inlay pattern suits a full dresser front. A smaller craft stencil is better suited to a drawer panel, chair back, or side table top. Check the product page dimensions before ordering so the finished pattern fits the surface properly.

2. Choose the right surface

For furniture stenciling, the flexibility and thickness of the stencil material is more important than it is on flat walls. Look for a laser-cut Mylar stencil that is at least 10 mil thick. Thicker Mylar lays flat across surfaces, holds its shape through repeated use, and bends around edges and curved furniture surfaces without tearing.

3. Consider the design style

Match the stencil pattern to the style of the room. Bone inlay and Moroccan patterns suit boho, eclectic, and global-inspired interiors. Anna Damask design and classical chalk paint stencils suit traditional and transitional spaces. Geometric and tribal designs suit contemporary and modern rooms.

4. Decide how you will use it

If you are stenciling an entire piece with a repeating allover pattern, choose a stencil with built-in registration marks for easy alignment. If you're adding one decorative motif to a corner, tabletop center, or chair back, choose a single-design stencil instead.

Why choose Cutting Edge Stencils

Janna Makaeva and Greg Swisher founded Cutting Edge Stencils in 2008 after running the New York area's leading decorative painting company. Every stencil in the collection features an original artist-designed pattern. Each one is made in the USA from durable, reusable Mylar.

The collection includes exclusive patterns for every furniture style, from bone inlay furniture stencils and damask designs to tribal, geometric, and botanical patterns. Every stencil is designed for DIY beginners and experienced painters alike.

FAQ

Can beginners stencil furniture?

Yes. DIY furniture makeovers with stencils are one of the most beginner-friendly decorative painting projects. Start with a small flat surface like a drawer front or tabletop, use minimal paint on the brush, and build color gradually.

What paint works best for furniture stencils?

Several types of furniture paint can work well with stencils, including chalk paint, acrylic paint, mineral paint, and latex paint. Choose a paint that is suitable for your furniture's surface and follow the manufacturer's preparation and application instructions for the best results.

Can I stencil over painted furniture?

Yes. Make sure the existing paint is fully cured and the surface is clean before stenciling. If the surface has a glossy finish, lightly sand it to improve adhesion and remove any dust before applying the stencil.

Do furniture stencils work on wood?

Yes. Wood furniture can be stenciled after the surface has been properly prepared. Painted, primed, and sealed wood should be clean and free of loose or peeling finish before stenciling.

Can I stencil IKEA furniture?

Yes. IKEA furniture can be customized with stencils, including dressers, cabinets, and side tables. Bone inlay stencil kits are especially well suited to IKEA dresser and cabinet makeovers.

Can I use wall stencils on furniture?

Yes, in most cases. Smaller wall stencil patterns work well on large furniture surfaces like dresser fronts and cabinet panels. For smaller furniture pieces, the craft and furniture stencils in this collection are specifically sized and designed for furniture-scale projects and are usually the better fit.
