Get started with popular stencil tools and supplies

Find the supplies you need for projects of every size. Whether you have a full room makeover or a small craft project, here are the tools you'll need most often:

Whether you're painting walls, furniture, cabinets, floors, or home décor, these tools are suited to common stenciling techniques. Many of these tools can also be reused across a variety of project types if kept with proper care.

Which stencil tool do I need?

Choosing the right tool depends on your stencil design, the size of the openings, and the surface you're painting.

  • Dense foam roller: works best for large repeating patterns and broad stencil openings on walls, floors, and ceilings.

  • Stencil brush: is ideal for detail work, shading, corners, and projects using multiple colors on furniture, cabinets, crafts, and walls.

  • Replacement roller covers: are for replacing worn covers to maintain even paint application across all roller projects.

  • Repositionable spray adhesive: helps improve stencil contact and prevent paint bleed on detailed designs on smooth and lightly textured surfaces like walls, ceilings, and furniture.

  • Clip-on stencil level: keeps repeating patterns, borders, and stripes perfectly straight on walls.

  • Stencil essentials kit: is the go-to starting set for first-time stencil projects and most general DIY applications.

Each tool serves a different purpose, depending on your stencil design and painting surface. If you're using a stencil brush, selecting the right brush size is also really important.

Consider the brush sizes for the expected outcome

Choose a brush that fits comfortably inside the stencil openings for better control.

If you are working on a large repeating wall pattern, a Dense Foam Roller is usually the better and faster option.

Brush vs. roller: Which should you use?

A dense foam roller works well for larger stencil openings and repeating wall patterns. It works especially well on smooth surfaces or minor texture. Load the roller lightly, then roll off most of the paint onto folded paper towels before applying light pressure to the stencil.

A stencil brush provides more control over smaller openings, corners, shading, touch-ups, and projects that use multiple colors. Use a nearly dry brush with a light swirling or pouncing motion to help reduce paint bleed. Brushes work better for textured surfaces as you gain more control.

FAQ

Should I use a stencil brush or a foam roller?

Use a dense foam roller for large, flat areas and repeating wall patterns. Choose a stencil brush for smaller openings, corners, detail work, shading, or multiple colors.

How do I help prevent paint bleed?

Paint bleed can feel tricky at first, but it is easy to manage. First, do not overload your roller with paint. A thin even coat of paint is enough. Remove excess paint from your brush or roller before painting by blotting it off to a paper towel, use light pressure while stenciling, and make sure to secure your stencil with a painters tape and/or spray adhesive to help reduce movement during application.

Do I need repositionable spray adhesive?

Repositionable spray adhesive is optional but recommended for most projects. It can help improve stencil contact on detailed designs, ceilings, or lightly textured surfaces when used according to the product directions.

How do I clean stencil brushes and rollers?

Clean tools before the paint dries and follow the paint manufacturer's cleanup instructions. For all water-based paint, rinse brushes and rollers thoroughly, avoid soaking natural-bristle brushes for long time, and allow rollers and brushes to dry completely before reuse. Use our Brush-scrubbing tool for thorough cleanup of your brushes. Murphy Oil Soap is excellent for brush cleanup as it cleans and conditions them at the same time.

When should I replace a foam roller cover?

Replace the roller cover when the foam becomes stiff, torn, or no longer applies paint evenly. Proper cleaning and drying can help extend its lifespan.

What comes in the Stencil Essentials™ Kit?

The current Stencil Essentials™ Kit includes a dense foam roller with handle, a 5/8-inch natural-bristle stencil brush, and a clip-on stencil level.
