Tile Stencils Can Give Boring Ceramic Tiles A Stylish Look
Good morning, my Cutting Edge Stencils friends! If you're looking for affordable and unique flooring options, consider using our floor stencils as a chic alternative. Stencil patterns are an easy and inexpensive way to update old flooring. Today we’re going to share how to add a pop of color and pattern to a boring floor using the Cordelia Tile Stencil. Come take a look... We'd like to introduce Erika, a creative DIYer from Cutting Edge Stencils. Erika's friend had builder beige tiles and she dreamed of getting a pretty patterned floor just like the ones on Pinterest. Since money was tight, Erika offered to help her stencil the tiles. Watch this quick video tutorial about this floor project. Let's walk through all of the steps for this super easy project. She gathered up all of the materials for this project. The first thing Erika did was clean her floor using Savogran Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) to ensure there wasn't any debris. She followed the instructions on the TSP packaging for cleaning.
Once the floor had been properly cleaned, Erika primed it using Stix Waterborne Bonding Primer by Insl-x. She used a foam roller to apply the paint and a paint brush to paint along the edges.
Cleaning and prepping the floor is key to completing a painted floor that will last for years.
Two coats do the trick! STIX primer is perfect for a project like this. It adheres to the tile and provides a great base for painting and stenciling. After the primer was dry, Erika applied her base coat of paint. She painted the base coat using Benjamin Moore Ben flat in Navajo White. Now she was ready to start stenciling. Erika chose our Cordelia Tile Stencil. This pretty stencil pattern was inspired by geometric Moroccan designs and has a beautiful feminine touch. Since her existing tiles were about 12 inches, Erika used the Large stencil pattern because it fit perfectly over her tile. Erika sprayed the back of the stencil with repositionable spray adhesive. We like Stick It Spray It repositionable spray adhesive. You could use any respositionable spray adhesive that is typically found in a craft store like Michaels. Erika and her buddy were ready to start stenciling! She purchased two stencil patterns so they could work along side each other. Erika placed the stencil pattern on top of the tile. For this project she was using two Benjamin Moore paint colors, New York State of Mind and Puritan Gray. They both used a stencil brush to paint the pattern and made sure to brush off excess paint onto a piece of paper towel. After each section was complete, they would un-tape the stencil and reposition so they could paint all of the tiles. Erika and her friend continued to work across the floor. Once the entire floor was stenciled, Erika applied a two coats of Varethane waterbased polyurethane to increase durability and protect her stencil. She gave the top coats time to dry and then stepped back to admire her beautiful work! How amazing is this?Just a little bit of paint and a pattern, Erika was able to completely transform her friend's floor. Tell us, in which room in your home would you stencil a floor? We'd love to read your thoughts in the comments below. Haven't had enough stencil fun?
