Welcome back to Cutting Edge Stencils' blog! Have you ever wondered what inspires the patterns for our wall stencils? Janna Makaeva is not only one of the owners but she's also the creative mastermind behind our gorgeous stencil patterns. Today, we're going to take you behind the scenes to see what inspired the creations of one of our favorite floral stencil patterns, the Japanese Peonies Allover.
A Little Info on the Japanese Peony
For centuries, the tree peony was grown in China but only for imperial family. This special flower was only allowed to be grown and enjoyed by the Chinese Emperor. Once the exclusive blossom traveled to Japan it became more readily available to the average person to grow in their garden.
It's a hardy perennial plant, that despite its delicate appearance, can grow in windy mountain regions with severe winters. The enormous silky flowers blooms for about a week each May. These pretty peony plants can live up to 150 years.
The Making of A Stencil
This gorgeous flower also happens to be growing in Janna's home garden. She says, "It's one of my favorite plants, and each Spring I can’t wait for that magnificent week when they are in bloom. The bees love them too, as the flowers are full of pollen."
You see, Janna is an avid gardener and loves spending time tending to her blooms when she's not in the stencil studio. While spending time in her garden, Janna felt compelled to translate the beauty of the Japanese Peony into a stencil pattern. She drew this design while sitting in her garden.
After the pattern was drawn, Janna tested it out on a wall in our studio using bright pinks and bushy greens to replicate a real peony.
