Stenciling A DIY Lampshade Using the Drifting Arrows Pattern
Good morning, my crafty friends! There is nothing that Cutting Edge Stencils loves more than stumbling upon a hidden stencil surprise. We have adored peek-a-boo patterns on furniture and within closets so we were delighted to see a stencil pattern painted on the inside of a plain lampshade. Come check out this fun DIY project using stencils…
We’d like to welcome back Ashley, the creative mastermind behind Domestic Imperfection. Oh after you check out her cool stencil project, be sure to enter the stencil giveaway on her blog. A couple of months ago, Ashely received an email from a company called I Like That Lamp The company sells DIY lampshade kits where you order the exact size you need and use your own fabric to customize it. They offer a ton of lampshade inspiration including an idea where you cut out shapes before assembling the lampshade so that the shapes light up when you turn it on. Ashley loved the idea! She decided to reuse her Drifting Arrows stencil from her Paint-A-Pillow kit to get a similar look. Since our stencils are reusable, it makes sense to use them for multiple projects!
The first thing Ashely did was roll out the styrene included in the lampshade kit and place her stencil design on top of it. Painter’s tape can hold the stencil in place. Then she used a gold paint pen to fill in the Drifting Arrows stencil pattern.
After each section was stenciled, Ashely would pick up the stencil and reposition until the entire surface was painted.
Next, Ashely followed the directions in her lampshade kit and removed the plastic backing to expose the sticky part of the styrene. Then she positioned the stenciled styrene on her kelly green fabric. Then she trimmed the fabric to fit the lampshade.
Ashely used binder clips to hold the lampshade ring in place and then glued her top seems.
Ready to see how it all turned out? Here is what looks like a simple green lampshade.
But when you get close, there’s a stenciled surprise on the inside! We love the glittery gold arrow pattern.
The best part is that the pretty stencil pattern shines through when the lamp is on.
