Whether you're painting walls, furniture, cabinets, floors, or home décor, these tools are suited to common stenciling techniques. Many of these tools can also be reused across a variety of project types if kept with proper care.
Which stencil tool do I need?
Choosing the right tool depends on your stencil design, the size of the openings, and the surface you're painting.
-
Dense foam roller: works best for large repeating patterns and broad stencil openings on walls, floors, and ceilings.
-
Stencil brush: is ideal for detail work, shading, corners, and projects using multiple colors on furniture, cabinets, crafts, and walls.
-
Replacement roller covers: are for replacing worn covers to maintain even paint application across all roller projects.
-
Repositionable spray adhesive: helps improve stencil contact and prevent paint bleed on detailed designs on smooth and lightly textured surfaces like walls, ceilings, and furniture.
-
Clip-on stencil level: keeps repeating patterns, borders, and stripes perfectly straight on walls.
-
Stencil essentials kit: is the go-to starting set for first-time stencil projects and most general DIY applications.
Each tool serves a different purpose, depending on your stencil design and painting surface. If you're using a stencil brush, selecting the right brush size is also really important.
Consider the brush sizes for the expected outcome
Choose a brush that fits comfortably inside the stencil openings for better control.
-
For small openings, fine details, and touch-ups: The 1/4" Professional Stencil Brush and 1/2" Professional Stencil Brush give you the most precision for tight areas and intricate stencil openings.
-
For general stenciling, shading, and corners: The 5/8" Stencil Brush, 3/4" Professional Stencil Brush, and 1" Professional Stencil Brush are the most versatile sizes and the ones most beginners reach for first.
-
For larger openings and broad stencil motifs: The 1.5" Professional Stencil Brush and 2" Professional Allover Stencil Brush cover more surface area quickly and work especially well on large allover wall patterns.
If you are working on a large repeating wall pattern, a Dense Foam Roller is usually the better and faster option.
Brush vs. roller: Which should you use?
A dense foam roller works well for larger stencil openings and repeating wall patterns. It works especially well on smooth surfaces or minor texture. Load the roller lightly, then roll off most of the paint onto folded paper towels before applying light pressure to the stencil.
A stencil brush provides more control over smaller openings, corners, shading, touch-ups, and projects that use multiple colors. Use a nearly dry brush with a light swirling or pouncing motion to help reduce paint bleed. Brushes work better for textured surfaces as you gain more control.
