Accent wall stencils

Accent wall stencils are an easy, affordable way to create a custom feature wall using paint. Cutting Edge Stencils are reusable wall stencils for painting designed for DIY accent wall projects. They create a wallpaper-inspired look while letting you choose the paint color, finish, and overall level of contrast.

Create a custom accent wall with reusable stencils

A painted accent wall with a stencil pattern adds character and visual interest to any room. Whether you want bold color and high impact or a subtle wallpaper alternative, a reusable wall stencil gives you full control over the result.

Here are some reasons why people choose stencils:

  • Reusable and durable: Laser-cut from durable Mylar, our stencil holds its shape through repeated use and can be cleaned and reused across multiple rooms and projects.

  • Beginner-friendly: Stenciling does not require advanced painting skills or specialized equipment. A stencil brush, dense foam roller, painter's tape, and interior latex or acrylic paint are usually enough to get started.

  • Clean, decorative results: With the right technique, stenciling can create a crisp, wallpaper-inspired pattern without wallpaper paste or permanent installation.

  • Easy to refresh: When you're ready for a change, simply paint over the stencil design and start fresh. There is no wallpaper to strip or adhesive to remove.

  • Easy to repeat: Many allover stencil designs include registration marks to help you align the pattern as you move across the wall, making it easier to create a consistent repeat.

Popular accent wall stencil designs by style

Whether you prefer a bold color statement wall or a subtle painted accent wall pattern, there is a design here for every decorating style and space. Browse by the look that best suits your room and your color scheme.

1. Butterfly wall design

Delicate butterfly motifs add a light, whimsical quality to bedroom accent walls, nurseries, and guest rooms. These butterfly wall designs work beautifully in soft neutrals or bold contrast colors and suit both children's spaces and adult interiors.

2. Animal wall designs

From woodland creatures to tropical birds, animal wall stencil designs bring personality and storytelling to a feature wall. These suit nurseries, kids' rooms, and any space where you want a distinctive focal point.

3. Mandala wall designs

Intricate circular mandala patterns create a strong focal point on an accent wall. Mandala wall designs work especially well in bedrooms, meditation spaces, yoga rooms, and other spaces where you want an artistic focal point.

4. Nautical wall designs

Coastal and nautical accent wall designs bring a relaxed, breezy quality to bathrooms, sunrooms, entryways, and living spaces. Rope motifs, waves, and maritime patterns work especially well in coastal, beach-inspired, and nautical interiors.

5. Farmhouse wall designs

Farmhouse wall designs like stripes, checks, and cottage-inspired patterns bring warmth and charm to kitchens, guest rooms, living rooms, and bedrooms.

6. Mural wall design

Multi-piece mural wall designs combine coordinating designs to create a large-scale scene. These suit bedrooms, nurseries, living rooms, and other spaces where you want a high-impact focal point.

7. Modern wall design

Arch, abstract, and contemporary modern wall stencils give a fresh, graphic quality to any feature wall. The Willow Arch wall design and Geo Abstract wall design are popular choices for bedroom and living room accent walls.

8. Traditional wall design

Classical and heritage-inspired wall stencil designs add dimension and architectural detail to formal spaces. These designs work well in dining rooms, hallways, and any room where you want a warm, polished look.

Find the right stencil for your accent wall

Not every stencil design suits every space. Before you start, you can use these four factors to narrow down the right accent wall stencil for your room.

1. Room style

Match the stencil pattern to the mood of the room. Botanical and floral designs suit a bedroom or guest room. Geometric wall design and modern patterns work well in a living room, hallway, or home office. Chinoiserie patterns and damask designs suit a dining room or formal space. Stripe and check patterns bring charm to a kitchen, entryway, or bathroom.

2. Pattern scale

Large-scale designs create a dramatic focal point and are well suited to taller walls, high ceilings, and rooms where you want the pattern to pop. Smaller repeating patterns offer a softer, wallpaper-inspired appearance and work well in compact spaces like a guest room, bathroom, or hallway.

3. Wall size

Larger walls can showcase oversized motifs and bold accent wall patterns. Smaller feature walls, such as the wall behind a headboard or a fireplace, often suit medium or smaller repeats that do not overwhelm the space.

4. Paint color and finish

High-contrast colors create a bold statement and add color and dimension to a neutral room. Tone-on-tone finishes can add subtle texture and depth without harsh contrast. Try a higher-sheen stencil color over a flat base in the same color. Both approaches work with standard interior latex or acrylic paint.

FAQ

Are wall stencils easier than wallpaper?

Unlike wallpaper, stenciling does not require paste or professional installation. Apply paint through the stencil openings with a brush or roller, then reposition the stencil to repeat the pattern. If you want to change the look later, simply paint over the design.

What paint works best for wall stencils?

Interior latex or acrylic paint works well for most wall stenciling projects. For crisp edges, load your brush or roller lightly and remove excess paint before applying it through the stencil. For a tone-on-tone effect, you can experiment with different sheens over the same base color.

How long does it take to stencil an accent wall?

The time depends on the size of the wall, stencil pattern, and your experience. Simple designs on a small feature wall may go relatively quickly, while intricate patterns and larger walls require more time for repositioning and detail work.

Do wall stencils work on textured walls?

Stencils can be used on lightly textured walls, but the results may not be as crisp as they are on a smooth surface. Light pressure, minimal paint, using stencil brushes instead of rollers and careful stencil placement can help reduce paint bleed. Heavily textured walls are generally  challenging to stencil.

Can I stencil over previously painted walls?

Yes. Make sure the existing paint is fully cured and in good condition before stenciling. Flat or eggshell latex walls provide the best surface for a clean stencil result. Higher-sheen surfaces may increase paint bleed, so test the stencil first or apply an appropriate flat base coat before beginning.

Which rooms are best for accent wall stencils?

Accent wall stencils work in every room of the home. A bedroom headboard wall, a living room focal point behind the sofa, a dining room feature wall, a bathroom accent, a hallway, an entryway, a guest room, and even a ceiling or fireplace. A wall that naturally draws your attention when you enter the room can be a good choice for a DIY accent wall.
