Stencil Designs Can Recreate Your Favorite Chinoiserie Wallpaper Style
Welcome back, my Cutting Edge Stencils friends. A blank wall is a blank canvas with tons of decorating possibilities. The easiest and most affordable way to dress up a white wall is with paint and a wall pattern. Today we’re sharing how easy it is to give an accent wall a wallpaper look using our Secret Garden Toile Allover Stencil which recreates the look of your favorite chinoiserie wallpaper.
We’d like you to welcome back Greg, one of the Cutting Edge Stencils owners and a creative DIYer. Greg a had a white wall that was screaming for a pick-me-up. Rather than leave it blank, he decided to paint a pretty pattern using a Chinoiserie wall pattern, our Secret Garden Toile Allover Stencil. Here is what it looked like before its stenciled makeover. For our visual fans, you’re going to love this stencil tutorial that Greg put together. In this short video, he shows fans how easy it is to stencil an accent wall using a wallpaper stencil.
Let’s walk through the steps for completing this project. Greg started with a freshly painted white wall. He decided to use our toile wall pattern for this inspiring project, the Secret Garden Toile Allover Stencil.
With his toile pattern in hand he was ready for the fun part, stenciling! Greg carefully taped the stencil to the wall. He used the clip-on stencil level to ensure the pattern was even on the wall.
Greg made sure he brushed off any excess paint on a piece of paper towel. Too much paint will cause the design to bleed. He painted the chinoiserie pattern in blue using a dense foam roller. Once the entire design was painted, he carefully removed the stencil from the wall to reveal the design.
Since the wall was not complete, Greg lined up the stencil using the interlocking pattern. Our stencil designs make overlapping the previously painted part easy.
After it was lined up and taped to the wall, he continued to paint the pretty toile pattern.
When the wall was complete, Greg he stepped back to admire the beautiful pattern. Are you ready to see how it all turned out? Here is Greg’s stenciled accent wall featuring the Toile Stencil.
This hand-painted pretty pattern certainly adds charm to this white wall and has an expensive wallpaper look.

I have begun an allover stencil project with latex paint and have found the large stencil is REALLY hard to clean, even with 2 soakings in Lift Off and then lots of lacquer thinner! This can’t be right. Should I thin my paint, use a different paint or a different cleaning method?
Hi Sharyn,
I am sorry to hear of the trouble you are having! So that I can best assist you please answer the below questions:
What paint finish are you using to stencil? (satin, eggshell, flat, etc.)
What paint brand are you using?
Has the paint dried on to the stencil prior to your attempt to clean it?
Because we don’t recommend the use of paint/lacquer thinner, has the stencil been damaged?
As soon as I get the answers to these questions, I will be able to better assist you with your questions.
Thank you!
~Diana
Hi. I would love to use this stencil in my bathroom. Greg made it look so easy, and it turned out beautifully much like an expensive chinoiserie wallpaper.
