A DIY Stenciled Hutch Using the Herringbone Stitch Stencil
Good morning, my DIY friends. Does looking at your old pieces of furniture leave you feeling glum? Painting and stenciling a piece of furniture is an easy way to transform it from blah to ooh la la. It’s also a budget-friendly alternative to purchasing new furniture AND it allows you to create an item that reflects your personal decor style. Cutting Edge Stencils is here to bring you a simple DIY idea to update a plain hutch using stencils. Come take a look at this furniture makeover that uses a splash of color and pattern…
We’d like to welcome Kim, one of the creative DIYers behind the blog The Bragging Mommy. Kim admits that she loves a good DIY project. When Kim and her husband moved into their new house, she created a laundry list of DIY to-do items. That list included giving her hall hutch a makeover. Here’s what it looked like before:
Simple and functional. Kim wanted it to have more personality and felt the best way to achieve this was through color and pattern. She fell in love with our Herringbone Stitch Allover pattern. Herringbone is a very trendy geometric pattern and this particular version puts a hand-crafted spin on it. Kim said, “I knew it would look perfect as a backing on my hallway hutch and it DOES!”
Kim started the project by painting the piece of backing on the hutch. She painted it an off-white color to match the existing piece of furniture using Olympic in Golden Mushroom. Once it was dry, she was ready to stencil. Kim used painters tape to hold the Herringbone Stitch stencil in place and then painted the pattern in a gorgeous teal color using a dense foam roller.
When the paint dried, she nailed it to the back of the hutch. She said, ” It looks so cute and really adds a fun touch to the whole piece.”
Ready to see what her newly stenciled hutch looks like? Here is a great before an after shot to show how pattern and color can add a splash of personality!
