Stencil Patterns Can Help Upcycle An Old Bamboo Rug
Good morning, my Cutting Edge Stencils friends! We all love a DIY project that inspires you to bypass the trash and repurpose an old household item so that it becomes beautiful and functional again. Today we have just that using our stencil designs! We’re going to share how to transform a drab looking bamboo rug into something totally fab using a pretty stencil pattern. Come take a look.
We’d like to introduce Sarina, the owner of Pixie Dust Paint and one of the talented DIY bloggers behind Southern Blenders. Sarina happened to be taking out the trash at her office one day when she spotted this old bamboo rug. She unrolled the hidden treasure with excitement. She knew that it was something she could totally clean up and give a new look so she dragged it home and unrolled. Once it was unrolled in her house, she cleaned it off and fixed any stray bamboo pieces. Then she decided to stain it using Miniwax Wood Finish in Dark Walnut. Note that she placed cellophane under the rug while she was staining it to catch an bleed.
Sarina gives all the tips and tricks for repairing and staining the bamboo rug on her blog, Southern Blenders. We’re going to focus on the fun part, stenciling! Sarina browsed our website and fell in love with our Gabi’s Brocade Stencil, a popular over-sized Damask pattern. With her stencil in hand she was ready to kick off her project.
Sarina placed the large damask stencil on the center of the bamboo rug. We always recommend using blue painter’s tape to hold it in place. The she poured her white latex paint into a foam tray. She dipped her stencil brush into the paint and brushed off any excess paint on a piece of paper towel. The secret to stenciling is to use very little paint. Too much paint will cause the design to bleed.
After the the stencil was painted, Sarina lifted to reveal the pretty damask pattern. She commented, “And the results were AHHHMAZING! Thanks Cutting Edge Stencils for your amazing stencils that allow Maria and I to think outside the box! Stencils are not just for walls, at least around here! ”
