Cutting Edge Stencils Shares Ikat Stenciled Home Decor and Room Ideas
Welcome to Thursday, my home decor trendsetters! It’s no secret that Cutting Edge Stencils loves mixing patterns and colors to get an eclectic look. One of our favorite patterns to play with is the ikat. What is an ikat pattern? Basically, a traditional ikat is created by tie-dying yarn and then weaving it into an intricate pattern. Because of how the material is made, the lines of the pattern are very fuzzy. This oh-so-popular pattern can range from bold and modern to subdued and traditional. We recently spotted the trendy pattern in eye-catching autumn hues in the fall 2013 Oscar de la Renta collection (shown below).
Since home decor and fashion trends go hand in hand, it makes perfect sense that we’re seeing this pattern pop up in our favorite home and garden publication. We think this roundup of ikat home decor items found on BHG is the perfect stenciling inspiration.

Whether you choose to go bold with an ikat pattern and make a major statement with drapes or incorporate it more subtly in wall art, stencils can help you get the trendy look for a fraction of the price! Check out some of our favorite Ikat stenciled projects…
Let’s start by introducing this print into your space with DIY wall art. Take the lead from Cassie, a DIY crafter from the DIY Club. Cassie loves finding treasures in other people’s trash. She found an old painting that she thought could be salvageable with a little paint and pattern. Cassie used our Ikat Saida Stencil and DecoArt Americana Paints in Sea Glass, Wasabi Green, and Coral Blush to create her masterpiece. Presto chango, she turned something old into a stylish piece of art! You can read her tutorial on this blog.
Or consider putting a splash of ikat across a piece of furniture like our fab stenciling fan, Jennifer did. She refinished a beat-up table and topped it off with the Ikat Bukhara Stencil in white chalk paint! We think this piece totally rocks!
Look down for a minute. Are your feet resting upon a plain rug that’s just screaming for a stencil makeover? Let’s give that baby a trendy ikat twist! Lucy, from Craftberry Bush, bought a white flatwove IKEA rug that she knew would be perfect for stenciling. Then she painted our Ikat Samarkand Stencil in three Americana paint colors; primary red, primary blue and turquoise. We are just WOW’d by the results!
Perhaps you’d like to stare out the window and dream of all the places you can stencil an ikat pattern. Well if you stencil a set of gorgeous curtains like Andrea, from Andrea + Kris + Our Chaos, you’ll have plenty of inspiration! She purchased a set of white panels from Ikea for $29.99 and then she stenciled them using the Ikat Samarkand pattern. Absolutely stunning!
Ready to make a bold ikat statement? Janice and Emmanuel, our fabulous stenciling fans, were ready! They used the Ikat Samarkand Stencil to create an accent wall in their master bedroom. We think their new space is jaw-dropping gorgeous!

It took me a while but once I decided I liked Ikat I really like it. I’ve been looking at some very colorful Ikat fabric at Hobby Lobby I’d love to use in our bedroom after it’s painted. Going to paint room light coral with apple green and white furniture, art. Yeah, bright and zippy. Our room tends to be dark so want to lighten it up, especially for winter which gets pretty cold and snowy in Grand Junction, CO area. We live few miles west and the CO river is 2 miles south of our house. I’d like to stencil a feature wall so am deciding which wall and which stencil I’ll use. Gotta love it kids.
Thank you Jane Ellen for your comment.
