A Passion For Pattern: A Stenciled Home Tour

Using Color and Stencil Designs in Your Home Decor is Sure to Make it Sizzle!

Welcome back, my DIY stenciling friends!  I can hardly contain my excitement and enthusiasm for what I have in store for us today! Color and awesome stencil designs have me acting like a kid in a candy shop.  Meet Kelle and Nick, recently featured on a Home Tour for Apartment Therapy, and whom are extremely comfortable not only with the use of color but also with the use of various patterns!  Apartment Therapy best describes the space as “New meets old, clean lines meet ornate pieces, rustic meets luxe — in short, the whole space is filled with surprise and wonder.”  Are you jumping up and down with excitement yet??

I know many people who have struggled with choosing the perfect color and I can feel their pain.  So when I come across a couple that is this comfortable with choosing color, it leaves me in awe.  Add to the fact that they didn’t just stencil a Trellis Stencil on one wall but in fact they incorporated various patterns throughout the apartment and my jaw is practically on the ground! It’s a talent for sure and one that catapults their space truly captivating.

Bold Color and the Trellis Stencil design give this room the wow factor!

In their home tour, Kelle and Nick talk about what attracted them to the home and their love of the layout.  They had a desire for a design scheme that would flow from one room to another so that only does the layout of the house facilitate movement, but the decor also keeps the eye active.  “I know some people find all the pattern a little crazy,” Kelle says, “but I need that.”  Here they are featured in their living room which as been stenciling in a black and white Trellis Allover pattern.   The Trellis Stencil is a very intricate design to begin with and by using bold, high contrasting colors they’ve further accentuate the design. They describe their style as upbeat and fresh, classic with hints of vintage whimsy.  I think I would have to agree!

Love the bold black and white Trellis Stencil design in the living room!

To break up the intense pattern design, Kelle has added white framed silhouettes that she painted herself.  Art is a great way to tone down a stencil and also really easy to make. While Kelle may have crafted these herself, Cutting Edge Stencils sells a Cameo stencil that would easily help create art similar to this.

Moving on to the family room, Kelle and Nick continued to use the Trellis Allover Stencil but this time it lines the back of their built ins.  I don’t know about you, but this is one of my favorite design elements.  I love the unexpected use of color and pattern.  I feel like it excites the eye when it catches it off guard.

I love when there's a stencil surprise on the back of built in bookcases! This uses the Trellis Allover by Cutting Edge Stencils.

And it doesn’t stop there! While Kelle and Nick used high contrasting colors in the living space, they went with a more subtle and serene color palette in the master bedroom. To get a stenciled look similar to the one below, consider using the Marrakech Trellis Stencil.

And the last stop on our Passion for Pattern tour belongs to their daughter’s, Bailey, and happens to be one of my personal favorites.  I know, I know it’s missing a stencil but it’s an awesome use of color and pattern. I absolutely love the contrast between the Tiffany blue dresser up and the pink and white striped wall. Gorgeous!
